Wow! Lot's has happened since I last posted here.

Youngest daughter, Kit-Kat competed in her first pageant ever, and placed!

In June,we went to Alabama's National American Miss in Montgomery. Out of 89 contestants, Kit-Kat placed in the top 15! She's evn followed in my footsteps and was voted 1st runner up in the "Miss Personality!"

I know that I've promised her that I wouldn't compete any more, but I am really jonesing right now.

There are a couple of pageants coming up that look really interesting.

Sitting out

I've decided to sit out the 2011 competition year.

This will give me an opportunity to shed that last 30 pounds, build my competition fund, and really research the system I'd like to compete in.

I consider my third runner-up finish at BOA nationals as positive reinforcement that I am on the right track.

Beauties of America Nationals 2010

I had such a wonderful time at the Beauties of America 2010 Nationals! With the exception of a storm that blew through while we were waiting to go to dinnner at Planet Hollywood Friday night, the weather in Myrtle Beach was wonderful! I am excited to report that I was named third runner up in the 4o's division! I also earned a Media Award for my sixty-six hours of appearances I made with my state title.

I didn't have a camera, and had to rely on my phone to document during the four day event, so I'm very short on pictures. I do have wonderful pageant sisters, and I guess one pageant brother (Tim from Pageantcast!)who are very generously sharing photos that I am in with me. I will post them as I recieve them.

Most of what I am going to share here were my outfits that I wore for each event. . Pageants can be an expensive hobby, but you can still look like a million without spending a million. Keeping an open mind, an eye not only for what looks good on you, but timeless classics, and being resourceful (and a little crafty doesn't hurt) one can build a great pageant wardrobe.

Here are my outfits and a little commentary on where they fit in the budget.

This is Orientation. I wore a dress I've had for several years.I purchased it at Walmart for less than $20. I've always loved the color. The blue, purple and green have always reminded me of the beach and really bring out the tan I had worked so hard to obtain!

This is my cocktail dress for the Red Carpet event Thursday night.

My interview suit was not only from Cato, it was on clearance!

Rehearsals on Day One was my favorite Ann Taylor Loft ombre dress.

Friday night we had dinner at Planet Hollywood. While waiting for the limo to arrive, a wicked thunderstorm blew in. This is my favorite LBD. I wear it quite a bit.

Rehearsals Day Two is another classic Cato clearance combo, from head to toe! Even my shoes were on the sale rack.

Saturday night was the main event!

My opening number dress was the latest craze, the convertable dress. Mine came from Avon.

I had to get creative with my fitness wear. I couldn't find anything that I liked, so I just found a shorts outfit I liked and made a tank-top into a kickin' fitness outfit.

Yes, I committed a "pageant sin." I wore the same gown two years in a row!

Sunday morning was the awards breakfast, where I was presented with my third runner up plaque. Here I am with the outgoing 40's queen, Sam Britt and the newly crowned 40's queen, Tamara Wissbaum. I'm wearing another favorite Cato find.

Push America at Moody Miracle League

Okay, I know this isn't an appearance, but I just had to share our evening at the Moody Miracle League with the men of Pi Kappa Phi involved in Push America, making a stop on their annual "Journey of Hope."

Push America's "Journey of Hope" is a philanthopic project, founded in 1977 through Pi Kappa Phi as a way for undergraduate fraternity brothers to experience leadership development through service of people with disabilities.

Interestingly, the name PUSH was once an acronym for People Understanding the Severely Handicapped.

In 1987, a young Pi Kappa Phi alumnus named Bruce Rogers (Chi) cycled across the country in an effort to bring more attention to the mission of Push America. Inspired by his inaugural trip, a 21-person team led by Jim Karlovec began the Journey of Hope in 1988. Every summer since, members of Pi Kappa Phi have cycled from San Francisco to Washington DC, while delivering a message of understanding for people with disabilities.

There are now three routes on the Journey of Hope: North, South, and Trans America. All three of the routes finish in Washington, DC. The North and South routes both leave from San Francisco, CA while the Trans America route departs from Seattle, WA.

We were visited by the 32 member South Team. Each of these young men raised $5000 to participate, and along each stop on their journey, they donate their time, talent and a monetary donation to each special needs organization they visit.

The Moody Miracle League hosted a quick dinner (thank you to Chick Fil A of Leeds AL!) ,then the guys served as "buddies" for our players during an exhibition game afterward. As a token of appreciation, our players presented each with a souvenier medal.

The first Sunday of every June the city of Birmingham celebrates the "birthday" of the cities oldest resident, Vulcan. I persuaded my husband, Heath and daughter's boyfriend, Taylor, to go along with me for an afternoon of history and fun.

On the ride over, my husband revealed that, despite being a life-long Birmingham area resident, he had never been to Vulcan Park! How he missed this growing up, I'll never know. Our school made at least one field trip to the park a year, but Heath had apparently never went. That made our trip even more special, as I was able to share the history of one of my favorite Alabama landmarks.

Despite the threat of afternoon thunderstorms, the day was a beautiful, balmy 85 degrees. We enjoyed a plate of Dreamland barbeque ( a local favorite) and the music of a local jazz band. Clown's from Magic Town Clowns painted faces and made balloon sculptures (called "twisting"). Exhibits by sandstone artist, Lonnie Holley, the Heart of Dixie Railway Museum were very interesting, while actors from The Children's Theatre troupe in costume roamed the crowd, entertaining children with stories of their characters. But the most popular exhibit outside, seemed to be the "drum circle" led by John Scalici of Get Rhythm Inc. Under a large tent was a large circle of chairs, about four or five rows deep, and each seat had a different drum type rhythm instrument. For the entire time we were there, the drumming never stopped. It would change slightly as people joined or left the circle, but never stopped. The thundering beat lent a pulse to the party atmosphere and made everyone feel like dancing.

The museum features the story of Birmingham's steel industry, the growth of the city, and the birth of Vulcan. He had been a feature of the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis to represent Birmingham's steel and cast iron industry by Italian artist, Giuseppe Moretti.

A new exhibit, From Factory to Field: The Dream of Baseball in Birmingham, told the history of the sport in Birmingham. From company baseball teams playing in sandlots, to the oldest standing ball field in the nation, Rickwood Field, to Micheal Jordan's short stint with the Birmingham Barons, the story was told in photos and memorabilia.

This year, photos with the birthday boy were provided by staff, printed on the spot with a festive, dated border. What a great souvenir of the event! (I will scan mine as soon as I can, to include it here. )

Soon, he was wisked away to be serenaded with "Happy Birthday To You," led by Birmingham's mayor, William Bell and blow out the candles on a yummy looking chocolate cake, with the help of children in attendance.

Free ice cream, provided by Blue Bell, was shared with everyone to celebrate.

The best part of the trip, was the ride to the observation tower for the breathtaking view of Birmingham, a first for my husband!

Oops! My blog was featured in this weeks episode (#240) of the Pageantcast. I failed the Pageantcast "AMAZING-A-Tron" because I do not have the word "AMAZING" anywhere in my blog....not even once!

AMAZINGly enough, I guess that I forgot about it (Sorry Tim) or maybe I've been using another word to describe when things are AMAZING.

So to make up for this AMAZING oversight on my part, I thought I'd better take AMAZING strides toward correcting this with AMAZING speed!

Cougar Que and March for Babies

Today was the annual Metro Birmingham March of Dimes March for Babies. Funds raised by the walk go to research to prevent premature births and birth defects.

I always enjoy the scenic, 4.2 mile walk through Southside. Unfortunately the weather was not on board for the walk. Team Royal Cup made a lovely trip into town and then had to flee for our cars shortly after our team photo as the torential downpour began!

I had a great time at the first annual Cougar Que Barbeque challenge in Clay Chalkville, Alabama. It was held Friday , April 23rd and Saturday, April 24th with proceeds benefitting the Marching Cougar Band. The contest was sanctioned by the Alabama Amateur Barbeque Society.

I was asked to judge the Backyard Burger Challenge. Here I am with my fellow judges and one of the tasty entries. Needless to say, after tasting several great burgers (just one bite of each), I was stuffed!

For an inaugural event, the turnout was great. There were several impressive grills and the whole field smelled fabulous! Director Dorinda Lutz put in quite a bit of work recruiting barbeque teams, and arranging events.

Not long after judging the burger event Friday night, the weather betrayed us and a thunderstorm moved in. Things did not improve much on Saturday, though there was a brief respite mid-day. Congrats to Grillin' and Chillin' for claiming the Grand Champion prize!

Whether I get to judge next year or not, I am looking forward to next year's competition!

Mrs Alabama / Miss Teen Alabama United States Pageant 2010

I had a wonderful time at the Mrs. Alabama / Miss Teen Alabama United States 2010 Pageant last night!

Of course, with my broken toes, finding suitable attire was a challenge but I think I pulled it off. Lucky for me I own a great pair of clear kitten heels that go with everything! I was able to walk relatively normally with nary a hint of a limp. To bling, or not to bling the lovely navy surgi-shoe had been a consideration for most of the week, but eventually I decided against it. No need to draw additional attention to it.

The pageant was held at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center. Director Rena' Lantrip really outdid herself this year! I was able grab a quick pic with Rena' who was stunning in her purple floral print gown.

I tried to also catch assistant director Terri Bolen, but so much was going on that I didn't get the chance.

The stage was very elegant and the venue was fabulous! The judges table was placed at stage level and somewhat reminded me of "Amerian Idol." I was a little concerned for official pageant photog Frank Carnaggio, who was perched atop a 12 foot ladder for most of the event!

Singer/songwriter Jeremy Lesley served as emcee, while his beautiful wife, Kym former Mrs AL US 2005, served as stage manager. Jeremy did a great job, calling on his skills as a former radio personality.

Be sure to listen for his new single "Cowgirl Tough" currently being played on stations across the country.

Competition was tough and I was really glad I was not a judge! Speaking of judges, the beautiful Sandi Dean, Mrs Georgia US 2007 and the reigning Mrs United States 2009, Tammy Johns Brown served on the judges panel and were more breath-taking in person than any photo I've seen of them.

I would have loved to get a picture with these lovely ladies, but they were being swept up in the whirlwind of what will be an amazing year for them both! I opted for a shot from the sidelines instead.

Blue Jeans for Babies Day 2010

Today is "Blue Jeans for Babies Day" at the office. It's a very popular March of Dimes fund raiser (actually, anything that involves paying to wear jeans at the office is a popular fund raiser).

Our receptionist made this really cool slide show presentation to remind everyone of our fund raiser today.

Here I am with some of my co-workers who were happy to donate to a worthy cause in exchange for wearing blue jeans to work.

I am excited to report that we raised $280 for our March of Dimes team!

Let The Miracles Begin!

I love Spring! The warm, sunny weather, the flowers in bloom, and the crack of the bat, as baseball fields across the country come to life.

Today was the Miracle League's opening day and the weather could not have been more perfect!

We had a great turn out, and everyone had a wonderful time. The colorful, new, tie-dyed uniform shirts were fun and festive.

I didn't get to buddy today (Sorry Stephanie) due to my broken toe, but did move quite a bit of merchandise from the souvenier stand. With games going on all over the park, including the adjacent tee-ball field, the atmosphere was electric!

Special thanks to the youth from Guntersville Church of Christ for making the drive down to serve as buddies.

Clean Up Day at the Miracle Field, March 20th

Yep, you guessed it....ME!

But that's okay. Volunteering is not always glamorous. Sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty. And that is exactly why I am posting this photo!

Saturday, March 20th was clean up day at Moody's Miracle League field. Me and several others sacrificed our Saturday to make sure that the park was ready for our season opener on April 10th. We replaced boards on the bleachers and benches, changed bulbs in the scoreboards, scrubbed down the playing surface (with a little help from the fire department), put down fresh pine straw and of course, made sure our indoor facilities were clean and sparkly. The weather was absolutely beautiful and thanks to a large group of volunteers, the work went really quickly

Yeah, it was a bummer to get such an unglamorous job, but knowing that we will be putting our best foot forward on opening day made it all worthwhile.

I bet you won't see any other appearance pictures like this one!

PSA for The Miracle League

I was really excited for the opportunity to record a public service announcement on Pageantcast for my main platform passion, The Miracle League. (broadcast info to follow when available)

The Miracle League is the world's largest baseball organization for physically and mentally challenged individuals. The Miracle League affords these individuals the opportunity to participate in a team sport in a safe environment.

This will be my fifth season as a volunteer for the Moody Miracle League, the first Miracle League field in Alabama. It is so refreshing to see players enjoying the game of baseball, displaying a true love of the game, and I look forward to every Saturday that we play. I was priviledged to be asked to serve on the League Board as Volunteer Coordinator and Media Liason.

Thank you to Tim Kretschmann of Pageantcast, for giving ladies in the pageant community the opportunity to share their platforms through these PSAs.

Road Trip! Alabama International 2010 Dothan Alabama

I had the opportunity to attend the Alabama International pageant in Dothan, Alabama. I love a good road trip, so I pulled on my boots, packed my sash and headed South.

I really enjoyed the event. Everyone was really beautiful and well-spoken. The judges truly had their work cut out for them.

Mercedes Marathon 2010

I spent the morning of Valentine's Day as "reigning royalty" at Birmingham's prestigious Mercedes Marathon. I manned the coffee station of "The Royal Mile," our company-sponsored mile. With snow still on the ground in places, we braved the cold temperatures to serve coffee and donuts as a record ten thousand runners whizzed by.

As the 23rd mile of the full marathon, it took some time to see the front runner. Coffee was really popular during the brisk morning hours, with both spectators and runners alike. Surprisingly, I served as many donuts to the runners as to the spectators!

Now I know what you are thinking...."Looks like Joy's been dipping in the donut box herself!"

Actually, I'm wearing three full layers of clothes to combat the unseasonably cold weather!

Hosting "Go Red" Day at the office!

Today I am hosting "Go Red" Day at my office. After sending out a message Tuesday, encouraging my female co-workers to "go red" today, I was excited to see many of the ladies have joined in the cause!

(Sorry this post is a little late...holiday hub-bub and all...)

I had the opportunity to participate in the annual Christmas parade in my hometown. The parade was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 12th but a cold front and driving rain forced the town to postpone until the evening of Thursday, December 17th.

This year I was fortunate to miss the parade transportation drama that I experienced last year as my best friend's convertable had been repaired and I was able to use that.

It's funny how $40 of candy looks like a lot in the tote but doesn't go very far.

So it's time to gear up for Pageant Year 2010!
I will , once again, be representing Alabama in the 40's division at Beauties of America!

I've been very busy between commitments to my family, my company and my friends at the Miracle League, but I have managed to make a few appearances.

I was on hand for the Miracle League World Series held at the "Field of Miracles" in Cullman AL. What a beautiful facility!

I raised donations and walked in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" walk in memory of my late step-father, a late co-worker who both bravely fought lymphoma but lost their battle, and a co-worker who is a leukemia survivor.

My daughter and I braved Moody's "Oktoberfest" despite cold and soggy conditions that cancelled the Miracle League exhibition game for that day.
I look forward to the year ahead and the preparation for the BOA nationals in August!

Beauties of America Nationals

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I have been super busy this month preparing for both the Beauties of America Nationals and my company's annual sales meeting that kicks off tomorrow.

Despite the threat of rain the entire weekend, Myrtle Beach was beautiful.

I really enjoyed seeing all my BOA sisters and finally getting to meet some of them face to face. Everyone was very beautiful and it was clear the judges had their work cut out for them as they picked the winners from this extrordinary group of women.

As always, Jennifer put on a really great show. I was excited to be a part of the 25th anniversary of such a wonderful system.

I did not place, but did earn a media award for my 40+ hours of personal appearances.

I just came from making an appearance at the "Paint The Town Red" Art Festival benefitting the Birmingham Chapter of the American Red Cross.

It was a street festival featuring digital artist from around the globe. Birmingham's Loft District was the backdrop for the work of 31 featured artists and several honorable mention artists.

Second Avenue North was blocked off from 22nd Street to 24th Street and those two blocks were packed with digital art displays, vendors, food, and live music. The Red Cross set up an information station in the center, providing information about the disaster efforts the Red Cross provides, blood donor information, and sold event tee-shirts.

As a sponsor, my company, Royal Cup, had a booth serving free coffee, iced tea and iced coffee to the public.

Art was projected on screens set up along the street, out of shop windows and on the sides of the buildings lining the street.

I was very excited to learn that one of my co-workers was among the honorable mention artists. The very talented Scott Gardner is also the co-worker that made my BOA car signs for the Christmas Parade. His piece featured a collection of, what else, coffee cups!

Biography

This may be an odd post, here among my appearance photos, so let me explain. There is a new button on the Beauties of America website, under my picture, that links back to my blog. It says "Biography." I thought it might be a good idea to actually post a short biography here, so that people will be able to learn a little about me, as well as seeing my appearances. Well, here goes....

Joy-Anna Wadsworth is a 4o-something Alabama native. She and her husband of ten years, Heath, live in Moody, Alabama. She is mother to three children, Julia (20), Tyler (15), and Kaitlyn (14). The family has two cats who think they are people: Zipper and J.B.

She attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, majoring in journalism. Joy, as she is known to her friends, is the assistant manager of the call center for a Southern-based, national beverage manufacturer/distributor, where she has been employed for over eighteen years. She also serves on the newsletter staff, submitting articles and photos.

Giving back to the communitity is very important to Joy. In 2006 she began volunteering with The Miracle League of Moody, a baseball organization for individuals with special needs. Today, she serves on the board as Volunteer Coordinator and Media Liasion, and can be found every game-day manning the souvenier stand, directing "buddies," and cheering on the players. She enjoys speaking to the public about the Miracle League, to raise awareness of the group's mission and has adopted it as her main platform topic.

Another topic near to her heart is "Promoting Protection of Law Enforcement Officers." Her inspiration for developing this platform in 2004, was her younger brother, Jason, a police officer in Birmingham, AL. Other causes she has supported include the March of Dimes, American Heart Association, and United Way, just to name a few.

The family is very active in their church. Joy has served as Sunday School director, Sunday School teacher, Girls In Action Missions teacher, and sings in the Celebration Choir.

Her love of pageantry began at the age of 12, when hometown girl (and now cousin, by marriage), Paige Phillips became Miss Alabama 1980. Paige, who wowed both the judges and audience with her double ventriolquist act, was later named first runner up to Susan Powell. Paige's influence helped Joy to step out of her comfort zone and explore the world of pageantry.

Aside from pageantry, she enjoys photography, scrap-booking, arts and crafts, relaxing with the family, and writing poetry. She is a member of Magic City Toastmasters, working toward her Competent Communicator and Competent Leader statuses.

Joy also enjoys baton twirling, and has passed her love of the sport on to both of her daughters.

"After twirling for over 30 years, I have learned some very valuable life lessons: enjoy what you do and you will excel; confidence and poise can make a drop look like part of the routine; and most of all, don't be too cocky, because you can wind up getting hit in the head!"

Today the city of Birmingham celebrated the birthday of one of it's oldest "residents."

Vulcan, the world's largest cast iron statue, turned 105.

The city celebrated his birthday in grand style, with live music, clowns, refeshments and a moment with the big guy himself!

Vulcan also has a special connection to my family. My maternal great-grandfather was a security guard when the statue was housed at Birmingham's fairgrounds. My grandmother used to tell stories of playing on his feet.

Memorial Day

I was priviledged to have the opportunity to honor the men in my family who served our country. Both my grandfather, Stg. Jack B. Lawley Jr. and his cousin, Col. William (Bill) R. Lawley, Jr., served during World War II. Bill, was even awarded a Medal of Honor.

My tiny hometown of Leeds, AL is a City of Valor. Prior to the current war in the Middle East, it had more decorated war veterans, per capita, than any other city it's size in the United States.

Alabama Highway 119 that runs through town was renamed to honor the three, Medal of Honor reciepents and a memorial park was erected there.

Appearance Opportunities Out of Thin Air

This post is in response to a post I saw earlier today on a Voy board.

I had originally written it on or about April 18, 2008. Several had told me they thought my answer was good, so I saved it to again share later. Because "pageant season" is in high gear, someone usually posts a question about "appearance ideas" and I post it again. but
I thought I would share it here on my blog as well.

At times making an appearance for your title is challenging. The ordinary public seems to think a girl in a crown and a banner are just there to look pretty. Sometimes we show up to volunteer, only to be told "no thanks." What's a queen to do?

Of course we need to think outside the crown box! Here is a list of ideas that I jotted down in just a few minutes and posted on one of the chat boards I frequent.

I will tentatively title it "Appearance Opportunities Out of Thin Air."

Why not start your own charity drive for something you are passionate about?

Does your city have a food bank or welfare co-op? You can host a food drive or a school supply drive.

Does your city have a homeless shelter? You could host a blanket drive. They also use volunteers to serve food and clean up.

Do you have a public park or school that needs a little TLC? Host a community clean up day.

Is there a Dress for Success nearby? You could host a business clothing drive for women trying to get on their feet. http://www.dressforsuccess.org/

Is there a Habitat for Humanity near you? They always welcome volunteers (don't suggest wearing the sash for this...get a cute t-shirt made..try CafePress).

Some other ideas that spring to mind are:

Do you have any autograph cards? You can have a "meet the queen" day at a local shopping center...signing autographs & posing for pics. (Our MAO girls do this at a big shopping mall over in Birmingham)

Any new stores or restaurants opening...see if they will let you hold the ribbon for the ribbon cutting.

Kiddie pageants and school pageants are kicking into full gear this time of year. Offer your services to the director as a judge or emcee. Google "pageants in (your state)" and see what pops up.

Do you have a talent (sing,dance, etc)? You could offer to perform just about anywhere. (pageants. festivals, nursing homes, etc)

If you're crafty, you could volunteer to teach a craft at a community center, Senior center, daycare, YMCA/YWCA, etc.

Do you have any women's organizations in your area?

Do you have a Girls Inc, Girl Scouts, or other girl mentoring organization in your area?

You can also volunteer at kindergardens, libraries (as a celebrity reader), and nursing homes.

OH OH AND..I forgot to mention US Soldiers! You can impact the lives of both veterans & current military personnel! Try volunteering at your local VA hospital. Veterans appreciate knowing they are appreciated. You could start a "thank you card" drive for both our vets & current military personnel (you will have to contact an organization to send cards abroad).
There are opportunities to aid the families of those deployed too.

I typed out this list in just a few minutes. Get out a piece of paper and write down every opportunity to minister to someone. You will be surprised what opportunities you will come up with that will qualify as "appearances"again...good luck and happy volunteering! JOY in AL

Miracle League Opening Day, Saturday April 18

We've kicked off another Miracle League Season! The weather couldn't have been more beautiful, a balmy 75 degrees. The multi-talented Daniel Ray sang our National Anthem and Mayor Joe Lee threw out the first pitch, accompanied by our fire chief and 2 city councilmen. I was somewhat confined by my duty at the souvenier booth, but I could still see and enjoy the games.

Last year I was assigned "media liasion" and coordinate any media that may come to our games and events. We were up against U of A's "A" day ball game, but were lucky enough to get Joel Paris with the Leeds News. We also hosted a documentary crew that was following one of our players (more info on that later).

I am also the volunteer coordinator. I instruct and direct the volunteers who "buddy" with our players. Buddies assist the players with batting, fielding, keeping them engaged in the game and help keep them safe. But their most important duty is to be encouraging. I only had 3 volunteers to 'buddy" but they all had a great time.

Midway through the day, we had a buddy sneak in on us. He had come especially to buddy with a little girl from his church. It was not until the game was almost over that I realized it was former Major Leaguer Todd Jones (pitcher Detroit)! He was very gracious and signed anything that was put before him and had an encouraging word for everyone who spoke with him. He even went over to the adjacent tee-ball field to encourage the children there. Here he is with our Braves and Cubs ( hes's the tall guy in the white shirt & shades). A real class act. I hope to have him back now that he's retired.

I managed to escape sunburn, thanks to my post, but my buddies were not so lucky. Note to self: bring more sunscreen!

Magic City Clown College Graduation, Sunday, April 19

Here I am "clowning around" with some of the graduates of Magic City Clown College. Yes, you read that right, clown college. These big-hearted volunteers learn the art of "clowning" and use what they've learned to entertain at children's hospitals around the state. In case you don't recognize me, I'm the one in the sash.

Mrs. Alabama United States Pageant, Sunday, April 19

After braving a torrential thunderstorm/tornado warning enroute to the pageant, I enjoyed the evening at the historic Bama Theatre. The show was great. The opening number routine featured the 2008 title holders in tuxedo tails and the delegates in red and white dresses. The beautiful and talented Melissa Zwilling served as emcee. Rachel Julierat crowned her successor the lovely Jessica Tinney Elmes, a former Miss Alabama USA. Here I am out front before the pageant began.

March of Dimes March for Babies, Saturday, April 25

Birmingham's annual March for Babies was held at Caldwell Park. The weather could not have been more beautiful! As a matter of fact, it was the hottest day of the year thus far. This year's walk route had been changed and it meandered through Birmingham's scenic, historic Southside. I always enjoy seeing the historic houses and the beautiful landscaping. Here I am just before the walk started.

Blue Jeans for Babies Fund Raiser

Today, Friday April 17th, I am hosting Blue Jeans for Babies Day.

As the March of Dimes team captain for my company, I am in charge of all our fund raisers up to the walk. These are fund raising efforts outside of the pledges for the walk.

You know even your pocket change can changes someone's life. With this thought in mind, every Monday for the past 2 months has been March of Dimes Monday. Each Monday donation buckets are left around our headquarters facility and people leave their pocket change. So far, I've collected $60 in just pocket change!

Our biggest fund raiser is always Blue Jeans for Babies Day. Because of our company dress code, we are not allowed to wear jeans to work, even on casual Fruday. Everyone jumps at the chance to wear jeans to the office, even if it costs them!

Miracle League Work Day, Saturday, April 4

In anticipation of our new Miracle League season, we spent the day tidying up the park and grounds. We picked up trash, trimmed the hedges, put down new pin straw and pea gravel. Here's a quick pic before I really got down to business.

8th Annual Mercedes Marathon, February 15th, Birmingham AL

Each year Mercedes Benz sponsors a marathon in Birmingham to benefit local charities. Runners come from around the world to participate.

My company, Royal Cup, Inc. , sponsors a mile that we call "The Royal Mile." I've volunteered every year. We set up a coffee station and serve coffee, hot chocolate and donuts to the public, along with live music and fun. It's a very popular mile with both the runners and the spectators and is rated very highly every year.

I got the honor of being "reigning royalty" on that mile. Wearing my banner draws extra attention and I often get to discuss my upcoming pageant, and my platform causes, along with general questions about my company and the products we manufacture. ...three subjects in which I am well versed...LOL!

This year, the marathon route looped back on itself, so The Royal Mile wound up counting as two! Serving as miles number 9 and 18. We served twice as long, twice as much coffee, saw twice as many spectators and got twice as much exposure!

Since the marathon starts at 7:00a.m., set up begins before 6:00a.m....kinda early for a Sunday morning! I was able to snap a pic before things got crazy.

Moody Christmas Parade..December 13, 2008

Here I am with the MONSTER TRUCK parade ride! Sorry the pic is so bad....never send a disposable to do the job of a regular camera....maybe my daughter's pics turned out better.

Saturday, December 13th was the Christmas Parade in my home town. I had prepared to ride in a black, convertable Mustang Cobra GT owned by one of my daughter's friends. But the unexpected death of another friend changed our plans Saturday morning.

Calls to all other known convertable owners and local car rentals yeilded the same results...all convertables already taken!

When yet another of Julia's friends offered his pick-up as an alternative, I was reluctant. Would that be a little too redneck (even though I AM in ALABAMA)? A wave of dread and panic swept over me, but with less than 2 hours to go before the lineup, I had little choice and agreed to just take a look. If it was presentable enough, I'd go; if it wasn't, then I'd just walk along with the band or something. Toby offered to clean it up and come on by. When he pulled up in the driveway, I KNEW I had to ride in it!

Luckily, I was sitting on ready. Our graphics guy at work made me three beautiful, pink signs, complete with the BOA logo. Two with my name and title for the sides and a third with "Join us!" and the website address for the tailgate. We used the clear "power lock" suction-cup hooks you find in the bathroom hardware section at Walmart (yes...I said Walmart...they get so much free advertising from me, maybe I should approach them for a sponsorship..LOL!) to hang them on the truck. Worked like a charm & were really economical. A little Christmas wreath with a hot pink bow, and we were on our way!

I carried a kitchen chair and covered it with a black throw so that I could sit facing forward. I could have ridden on the tool box but riding backwards makes me car-sick, and THAT would not have been pleasant.

When we arrived, they sent me to over to join all the other titleholders: our homecoming court, a few local MAO girls, our Junior Miss representative. Everyone seemed envious of my ride, that towered over their convertables. My best friend, who's daughters were riding on their dance school float, came by to check out the truck (after the day's drama) with her little boy Matt, who is almost 4. He took one look up at me and said to his mom, "I wanna wide wid Jo-Jo in da big twuck"....and so they did. So Cyndi, Matt and my youngest daughter, Kaitlyn sat on the tool box to help throw out candy. Son Tyler, and oldest daughter Julia, rode inside with Toby.

The coordinator said they were going to send the titleholders out between the judged floats to spread things out a bit. The coordinator put me first! I was about 6 back from the grand marshall (the mayor)and in front of one of the 3 fire trucks.

Each parade unit was announced over the p.a. as it reach the crossroads that marks the center of my town. I wrote a little blurb about this being the 25th anniversary and about celebrating "Beauty and Achievement at every age." The announcer announced me as "Moody's own Jooo

oooooy Wadsworth!" I felt like a movie star!

Unfortunately, I ran out of candy ($30's worth!) before I got that far, so all I could do was wave & call out "Merry Christmas

A New (pageant) Year Begins! ...November 23, 2008

It's that time that all us pageant girls look forward to....the start of the new pageant year!

October is typically the beginning of the "new year" for titleholders, as pageants name their local titleholders for the upcoming pageant season. Such is the case with the pageant I am participating in this summer, Beauties of America.

October 1st I was named Beauties of America Alabama's 40 2009.

2009 is the 25th anniversary for Beauties of America and director Jennifer Reed White promises big things are in store! Check us out at http://www.beautiesofamerica.com/

I've already made my first appearance for the year at Moody's "Oktoberfest", on October 25th.

Googling Contestants

Some have hinted that our judges may "google" us prior to the Beauties of America national pageant. This makes me a little nervous, especially since my blogs, website and myspace are primarily geared so my friends can keep up with me and are less than professional quality.

But, I understand that part of being a titleholder is visibility, therefore I thought I'd make the best of it. First I conducted a little test by googling my name and none of my blogs or my website comes up!

I used my whole name JOY-ANNA WADSWORTH and my "nickname" JOY WADSWORTH and tried pairing it with my title BEAUTIES OF AMERICA ALABAMA'S 40 all to no avail. If they need to see me, then they need to be able to find me...right?

Someone at work told me to go on my websites an post all the ways I use my name and all the ways my title would be/could be listed and that would cause something for the search engines to "hit" on. Well since they know more about the web than I, I am taking their advice... here goes:

July was another busy month.

My Toastmaster's Club, Magic City Toastmasters, recently won the Smedly award for enrolling 5 new members in the month of June and we are working toward our President's Distinguished status. Magic City Toastmaster's is the oldest Toastmaster's club in Alabama, formed in 1948. Our oldest member, having joined in 1952, is one of our most active! I am really lucky to have such a great group of individuals helping me hone my speaking skills.

July 19th was the beginning of the Dizzy Dean World Series. Moody hosted 10-12 year olds from across the South. The Miracle League hosted it's own World Series, hosting other Miracle League organizations from across the state. It was really exciting to meet other Miracle Leaguers, fellowship and share ideas. The World Series also brings in large groups of "buddies," volunteers that help Miracle League players as they bat and field. Many Dizzy Dean teams volunteer to "buddy" our players in between their own games.

As the Volunteer Coordinator, it is my job to aquaint our buddies with the special instructions needed to help our players. While most would expect 10 to 12 year old boys to ridicule those with special needs, I've found quite the opposite is true and I am continually (happily) amazed at the amount of compassion and concern these volunteers show.

July 26th was our third annual Miracle Ride fund raiser. The Miracle League hosted an 88 mile scenic motorcycle ride. An early morning rainstorm cut attendance quite a bit, but a 3 hour repreive from the rain insured those in attendance had a really good time. The guys from Thunder Roads motorcycle magazine came out. We had barbeque, a poker run, great door prizes donated by Rider's Harley Davidson and gave awarded 3 "Best in Show" awards for Custom, Metric and American motorcycles entered in the bike show. All proceeds from the ride cover the league's insurance cost for the year.

June 1st I was able to assist in an art opening for life-long friend Nancy Grimes. Nancy sketches and enjoys photography. She was the featured artist for June at the Leeds Arts Council in our hometown of Leeds Alabama.

Then I was off to Vulcan Park to celebrate the 104th birthday of one of Birmingham's oldest "citizens" Vulcan! Despite an unexpected summer thunderstorm, there was quite a turn out!

June 14th was the Miracle League's end of the season party. We had food, karaoke, face painting, inflatables, but I spent most of the day in the dunking booth! "Dunk A Buddy" was a big hit with all in attendance. I was even able to add my handprints to the new concrete pavers used along the walkway in the park, permanently marking my contribution to the league!

I was honored to be able to assist with this year's Mrs Alabama United States and Miss Alabama Teen United States pageants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

It was held in the historic Bama Theatre. I helped back stage by running errands, zipping zippers, making sure everyone was ready to go on stage and passing out awards. I had a fabulous time!

Also visiting were Miss Teen Wiregrass, Megan McNabb and Miss Alabama International Lauren Arnold .

Spring finds us ready for action! Jaye and I both walked in the annual March of Dimes March for Babies (formerly WalkAmerica).

The funds raised by the March of Dimes go research to prevent premature births and birth defects.

This cause is near and dear to our hearts as Jaye has a form of spina bifida and I was a preemie!

Mercedes Marathon: The Royal Mile

Every year my company sponsors a mile on the prestigious Mercedes Marathon. Usually I serve coffee & donuts to the bystanders or hand out Powerade to the runners, but this year, I got to do much more! My friend Jaye (Mrs Alabama American Dream 2008) and I were "reigning royalty" on the Royal Mile!

We wore our crowns and banners and cheered on the runners. We were even itnerviewed on Birmingham's Fox6 news!!

December 1st I rode in Moody's Christmas parade! I've never got to ride in a parade before...I've always had to march them! Unfortunately, I have no pictures as Little Bit dropped the camera and the film came out (gotta get me one of those digital cameras...LOL!)

This is my new appearance blog!
Here I will report on the various appearances I make as a title holder.

Currently, I am representing the 40-something women of the state of Alabama at this year's Beauties of America pageant.

Those of you who were familiare with my earlier blog "It's Good to be Queen" will know that I have deleted that blog as to not conflict with the website and business name of the fabulous Darleen Debeen. (Not that I could be confused with Darleen, but I wanted to clear the way for her to use that name should she choose to start a blog)

Fear not! Those blog postings have been moved to my personal blog Just Joy: Confessions of a Moody Mom.
